Hi guys i've done a search and read about 100 threads and really didnt resolve my question so i'll ask it. i'v got rust on my brush guard and exhuast tips how can i get it off, it wont come off with the polish i thought maybe steel wool or something might take it off. i'm thinking it's just on the chrome instead under it. it bugs me out cause the chrome has only been on my truck for a few months and i i polish all the time but yet its already rusting. any help will be appreciated.
the rust is from open pits in a poor chrome job. so yes the rust is on the metal not the chrome.
as far as i know chromium doesnt rust so yea i got an idea the rust in on or corroding the metal that has been chromed. rusting chrome has 2 stages called "under the chrome" and "on the chrome" under the chrome suppose to be the worst the chrome flaking off cause the metal under it is corroded. i'm looking for a way to get rid of this rust or rather if any body has used steel wool to rid the rust.
I use a product called Luster Pad on my FatBoy and it is the best that I have found. I would never use anything on my bike that would scratch my chrome. Just to let you know, this stuff has removed leather (or pleather, I don't know) that has melted off my wife's chaps onto the pipes. She has even used the pipe as a foot peg and melted the entire 4 inch heel off her boot (she was pretty intoxicated). But more importantly, it has also removed tree sap that had been on the pipes for an entire trip to Daytona and back (I live and hour south of Charlotte, NC). And trust me, the pipes get pretty damn hot and sap is not easy to remove once it has seen those kinds of temps for that period of time. Anything that has ended up on my pipes (sap, leather, rubber, tar, etc.), it gets rid of it without any problems.

If you get the Luster Pad, it comes with a 5 foot roll of the stuff. You just cut off what you need, 2 or 3 inches will probably all the chrome on your truck. Then all you do is rub it the spots you want to clean, a little elbow grease for the tough spots, wait for it to dry and wipe it off.

thanx guy.i could'nt find luster pad today so i asked a buddy today he has a badboy, he said to use a spray on hose off wheel cleaner that didnt work so thinking that i was growing some brains i called a wheel shop thinking they should know how to take care of chrome. they told me to spray it w/ wd-40 then use fine steel wool then repolish. WRONG. not only is some of the rust pits still there but its scratched up. so now i got to find a way to buff the scratches out.
they should sell luster pad at most bike shops that sell Harley style motorcycles, especially the custom chopper shops. and i am sure you could by it on the web also. i would try some of the bike shops that sell used harleys and choppers, harley dealers, and even some jap cruiser shops.
