fluid change E40D

i am gonna drop the pan and change the transmission oil filter this weekend seeing as how i have yet to do it to the truck in the 10000 miles i have owned it. the previous owner showed me where it had been changed before i purchased the truck so i let it go till now. my question is how much fluid should i expect when i take the pan off? i.e how much fluid should i buy?

also if i dont get all of it out cuz i know there is no way for me to get all of it out by just dropping the pan, but will mixing synthetic with regular transmission oil due any harm to the transmission?

thanks guys

Pan holds about 8 qt. Converter holds about 7 qt. Std capacity is 15.6 qt, plus a bit if you have an aux cooler. Check the label on the synthetic; it'll say if it's compatible with Mercon (NOT Mercon V). You should be able to get it all out; most of the earlier E4OD's have a drain plug in the converter.

The E4OD is the same as the 4R100 for changing fluids.

Not sure I agree with a couple of things here, Running a tranny empty rubs against the grain of common sense. And what's the point of changing half the oil? If you're going to do a job, do it right so you don't have to do it again (so soon).

Also I forgot to mention a couple things. First, go to NAPA & get an aerosol can of cooler cleaner. Disconnect both cooler lines, hook the cleaner to the front line, flush the coolers & hook the lines back up. While you're at NAPA, get 2 1-pt bottles of LubeGuard (red). After you've added a couple of quarts of tranny juice, dump in 1-1/2 bottles of LubeGuard. Works well with synthetic & dinosaur oil.

That's why you shut it off as soon as you see air.

This procedure changes all the oil, but you have to do it in more than one step. You can't pour new oil down the dipstick tube as fast as it pumps out, so you have to stop to refill it.

I agree completely. That's why I use that procedure every time I change my trans fluid.
