I'm considering buying a 2003 F550 6.0 automatic from the original owner. The truck has 88,000 miles and runs very good when warm but when it is first started (cold) it sounds like it is running on 3 cylinders and will barely move for the first 5 or so minutes. If you give it fuel it will move but not quickly. After a few moments it seems to run fine. The owner said it has always been "cold natured". He seems very honest and told me other things about the truck he did not need to, but this makes me nervous. Any advice or experience with this before? Sorry for no signature, this is my first time posting here. Thanks.
I have an early build 2003 6.o and it to is very sluggish in the morning. I don't worry about it. Sometimes a reflash of the pcm can help but then you may loose some fuel economy also. It also runs very rough too.

Welcome to FTE! I moved your thread to the 6.0L Diesel forum. You will get some more help here.
Running rough might be a sign of possible air in the fuel line or lack of fuel. Ask when the fuel filters was changed. He sounds honest from what you say. Does he have maint. records?
Thanks for the responses guys. I'll ask about the fuel filter. The truck has an automatic trans. and while I was testing it out I pushed the tow mode button at the end of the shifter a number of times, the RPM's did not change a bit. Does that mean the tow mode is not functioning properly or is it something different?
Thanks for the info. What is this CI-4+ that you mentioned, is it an additive or a type of oil? What does it do? Is there damage potential from this truck being run this way in the past? The owner told me he would start it in the morning and let it idle for 15 to 20 minutes before he would even move it. Thanks.
Are you referring to the high pressure oil pump? These don't have an injection pump...
Yes sorry about that. i meant HPOP some oils can foam and give poor running characteristics. This is part of why the new CI-4+ oils are now made they also deal with shear and soot.

The tow mode won't do anything when you are driving steady state on a flat road. If engaged from a stop, you will notice the RPM's go up higher before shifting through the gears while accelerating. If there is a difference on the shift point rpm's while accelerating, then you are good.
i had a 03 and now a 04 and in the morning its horrible, i let mine idle for about 5 min then get in the truck n go. when its cold it runs like **** but when shes nice n warmed up she runs like a champ... good luck
