On my 88 5.0 it seems to go through distributor caps every few months. Plus if I try to hold the engine at 2000 rpms the engine will jump around and not hold that postion. Also it will not really pull itself that well in 3rd and OD. I am thinking that the timing chain may be stretched. Just want to see what you all thought too. I have this posted in the 87-96 section too. Thanks guys.
Thanks for replying. I will check that out tomorrow after work and see what I come up with. I will let you know what I find. Anything else that you can think of?
The TPS is brand new and set to the proper voltage. The IAC has been replaced about 4 times with no luck. I am pretty sure that this is an ignition problem. Last night after some checking it looks like my timing chain my be stretched or the distributor is a tooth off. 115k on the motor.
Yeah, it is 4wd, but what does that have to do with anything? It does have the BW13-56 in it but that still works well with no noises from the case at all. From what I have gathered it looks as though the distributor is either off a tooth or the chain has slack in it. But I just want to make sure that I am looking this the right way. You have anything else that I could be doing wrong or anything else that it could be?
The caps that I am usiung are made by standard. I have never had a problem with them on any other Ford besides my truck. The electrodes on the cap where the rotor strikes have black spots that are rough in nature right where the rotor contacts it. The rotor has the same thing on the end of it as well. I know that they are going bad because the truck has a rough idle when they do. When I install new ones then the idle smoothes out and it runs better, but still no power at highway speeds. There are no cracks in them at all.
The rotor isn't actually supposed to touch the terminals in the cap, it just comes close enough for the spark to jump. If it's touching, then you certainly do have a problem.
Okay guys, I appreciate all the input. I took pics to show you what I am talking about. They are in my gallery. They show both the cap and the the rotor position in conjunction with TDC versus where the number plugwire is on the cap. Tell me what you think of these. Thanks.
