so the other night I was gonna take the booger bogger for a little hack, and its pitch black out so I end up hookin the battery up backwards at first
and it did its whole sparkin thing so I quickly unhooked and put it on the right way, and then my solenoid started smoking and after all that was done I had zero power, no lights no nothing. so I changed the solenoid and still nothing, btu when I cross it over I can make it turn over? fuseable link?
It might have been easier if they stuck with Black and Red for the only colors for wire... Amazingly, I've never done this one, however, my list of wiring errors isn't very short. Like the time I rewired my ex-father-in-law's light bar in his big truck: 3 hours of soldering, 15 orange lights, 3 rolls of 14 ga, 1 incorrect connection, and it all turned into a puddle of molten insulation in about 30 seconds. Younger and dumber. You might have nuked the voltage regulator. Where is the hogman when you need him? Have you seen this hoggie? He always seems to know what to buy...
Check the fusable link mounted to the positive side of the starter solenoids, replace with the same rating of fusable link. Check for frayed or burned wires from the starter solenoid out. Check your battery cables. Look for any wires or burned or melted wire or insulators and inspect those wires for continuity.
very likely you fried the contacts in the starter solinoid. so replace that. also there is a few fusible links. there is 2 coming off the solinoid they say fuseable link on them. there is also one in the main harness running into the cab.

There are others here that know what they are doing as well
You have problably fried the alternator & VR as they don't like reverse power either.
Rule of thumb.
The Positive cable comes from the Starter Solenoid which is right beside the battery tray. This cable is usally short so it can't be mis-taken for the ground cable.
The important part is the BIG + symbol on the battery
ha when its dark in the middle of a field its hard to see + and -
put the fusable on today.....mor then just that fried, so you think alternator might me messed? you can take the end of the link and touch it back to the solenoid and turn it over so?
1975Ford told ya right, you have a dead short to make that much smoke. Problem is that it could be just about anywhere under the hood, in the cab, even the fuse block. Just one of the many joys of wheelin, wires get shook up also. I think it wouldn't have mattered if you hooked it up right the first time.
You can take a small wire and jump between the battery lead and the "s" terminal on the solenoid to turn the motor over. This proves the solenoid and the starter (if it turns), nothing else.
Don't worry about the charging system till you get the motor running. With out having the system actually trying to produce, there's not much that can happen. At this point we don't even know if the rest of the system had power, regardless of whether or not the key was on.
becasue the truck isnt an everyday driver thing, its jsut an uninsured beater that I take out once in a while, so I dont leavea battery in it because kids around here like to steal.
Yep, you have 2 ignition circuits:
The start (or bypass) comes off the solenoid "I" terminal. It supplies current to the ignition only when cranking.
When you stop cranking the power is fed from the key switch in the "on" position.
At this point you need to find out if you have power going to the key switch. It is protected by one of the 6 or 7 (?) fuse links coming off the batt side of the solenoid.
Does the truck have gauges or idiot lights? Ignition is either black/red or black/yellow, depending.
Kids like to steal... Have you looked under the dash to see if anyone has tried to "borrow" your truck?
ha everyhting is good that way, no one trucks with it now, had a battery go missing once, but the ole 5 knuckle meat soother fixed that problem...............
it turns over if you short it out or whatever...but the fuseable link I got doesnt really fix the link thats fried...the one that is fried starts on teh battery side of the solenoid then like halfway down it has a little redwire running from it into some other place ha....
