looking to change out my old externally regulated alternator to a one wire 100-150 amp (internally regulated). It needs to bolt to a early 302 ford passengers side , anyone know of any late modle swaps or a reliable vendor to get one from . It needs to put out 50 or more amps at idle .
thanks jeff
Hay Joe tell me more about the GM alternator . I realize that i can change the pully but i would rather get a larger alternator that will do the job .
thanks jeff
Look in the phone book for an independent alternator, starter repair business. I went to some of the local parts stores looking for a high output alternator. All the sales people could find for me were the 65 amp units that there computer screens showed. I found an independent rebuilder and he built me a 105 amp unit while I waited and warranted it for a year. The difference was like night and day, it's really nice to find someone who knows what they are talking about.
Jeff, when I installed the gm unit I did so to get one wire hook up with no external regulator. I believe that now you can get the same in Ford unit. If you do want to use a gm unit, you can by fabbing a spacer to match up with Ford bracket. seems like I had to make a bolt diameter adjustment also. Tomorrow eve I will look close and give better info if you like. Joe
Most of my friends are using the GM one wire. It's cheaper than a Ford alternator and works just as well. I'm still using the old style with the external regulator. I may change it out later, but I just put chrome housings on mine and rebuilt it. Kinda like the old ones too and don't know much about the one wire style or wiring the one wire?
I went through this last July. I bought a chrome rewired Ford one-wire. It did not work. I took it back twice to the manufacturer before I found out the problem was the custom billet pulley. It was slipping so the alt was not turning fast enough. If I was going to do it again, I would go to the local auto-electric shop and have my existing unit rewired to a one-wire with 100 amp oputput. It will be cheaper and save you the fabrication/installation headaches. Good luck, Jag
