Camshaft Synchronizer Help!

camshaft sensor contd.
I started into this, but gave up on two hitches.
1-I can't see in there well enough to mark anything with any real precision. Even if you removed the whole ignition and intake, it would still be way buried.
2-My manual (Haynes) doesn't explain how to get TDC on anything....there must be a better way than sticking a pencil in your spark plug hole.....
If you just pull the old shaft out and put the new one in without the piston right, even if it's in the same rotation, don't you risk screwing up the fuel timing?
Anyway, I got the parts for about $190 and I'm hoping my local shop will pop the shaft in for less than two hours time.....
