My '84 did that, I just put a new controller in.
Of course I had to replace all of the fried GPs after driving to work with the darn things on most of the way....
The truck had been converted to manual control so I had to convert it back when I bought it, I used a parts store controller that first time, but the second one was from International and worked flawless for many years 'till I sold the truck. (Still working too.)
Thanks for your help I talk to a old friend after posting this forgeting he was a diesel mechanic. and he told me that I should have replaced all three components (plugs, controller and relay) at the same time. So I have replaced all three $230.00 later and so far so good Ill keep my fingers X
I am surprised the controller came out of the head without breaking off.
Since they have been there for so long, most are real pains to get out of the head.
If it does break, you have to pull the head to fix it.
I tried to get mine out several years ago, it would not budge.
When it started to kink I went the manual route.
That way cost 10 dollars and took 1/2 an hour to wire.
If you do do it the manual way, I like to use circuit that only has power when the key is on. That way someone messing around can not burn the glow plugs up.
All you do is install a push button inside the cab.
Run power to the push button.
Then run a wire from the push button to the relay mounted on the passenger side inner fender well.
Remove the purple wire from the relay and install the wire from the push button.
Push the button, glow plugs are on.
Hold it for 10 seconds.
Let off the button, glow plugs are off.
Start the engine.
