i want to get auto start for my truck for the upcoming winter. i know from exerience that you have to warm the glow plugs a few times before you cant easily start the engine, otherwise if you tried to start as usual, you'd sit there with the engine crankin and a lot of white smoke. so my question is, how will the auto start know to warm the glow plugs? is there a way to make sure the auto start works properly with my diesel?
I would let a pro install it. I installed mine and it was a real pain. I would find a shop that does a lot of them and get them to do it. There were 32 connections that had to be made to make mine work. Some easy some hard. Any name brand should be fine, just make sure it is for diesels.
I have one on my truck and i love it.Had it on there sence it was new.I used the ultra start paging unit, works good. The installers wont use the wait to start wire, they will use the 10 or 30 sec delay.10 sec delay works good, thats what i use.If it gets rely cold then ill go to the 30 sec delay.I dont know how the wait to start wire works cause with both units that i had in both trucks they never used that wire.
don't hook to the warm up light.. it isn't always on when the glow plugs are, and vise versa... i have a 25 second delay on my remote starter that gives the plugs plenty of time to heat up... add to that the "cool down" feature that keeps my truck running for 5 mins after i turn off the key that cools off the turbo and i really love having this on my truck year round.... bought mine and got it installed at circut city if i remember right... the kid who did the install was a little nervous about it... i told him to relax... take his time... and follow the directions closely and everything would be fine... and it has been since i got it...! i also got the remote door lock/unlock button on the remote..!

Do you know the brand? I like the sound of the cool down feature.
I have a Viper in my truck and it works great. Used all last winter and did not have any issues with it. It also has other features like a turbo cooldown mode.
I'm a little confused about this cool down feature....
Ok, it leaves the engine running, what's keeping someone from stealing it?
Am I correct to assume that the engine is still running, and the shifter and steering are locked (key out)?
I have the viper, remote start works great, it also has the cool down feature. When the cool down feature is activated it runs for the amount of time and dies. If someone were to make it inside of the truck to steal it, the moment they hit the brake to put it in gear the truck will die. You have to have a key and know were the valet button is located to push it or have the key fob to restart the truck. One thing i don't like is that you can hit the accelerator and it does not deactivate the feature. So, someone could damage the truck if they could get inside of it.
