The ignition box holds it back more than the distributor. unless the dist is fried

I personally don't like the mallory unilite dist. the little optical sensor that triggers it are prone to going out, and that little sucker costs $90 to replace. I had one, and had to replace it twice in one year second time threw the dist away, and bought a MSD dist, and never looked back.
The Mallory ignition boxes, are ok although I run the MSD stuff on mine personally.

My only gripe with MSD is they dont allow for less distributor advance than the black spacer. I have to make thicker ones.

The DuraSpark ignition is pretty darn good for a factory unit. A good rebuilt distributor and new control box will keep a mostly-stock engine motoring along happily, provided you outfit it with good wires and properly gapped plugs.

Motorsport at least used to have a better duraspark II modual of course the old Chryseler units mated up to the Ford distributor did about the same thing.

The Petronics system is an add on if I am not mistaken. It sits under the cap and replaces the old points with a magnetic system. Very good for retaining a stock appearance. The "II" is a billet design with their own style housing. I have looked at a bunch of different options concerning my distributor. I didn't like the price or function limits some brands placed on their products. I did find a distributor that is largely stock but also has some really good potential to make life easier with parts sitting on the shelves of most auto stores. I bought a GM HEI style system off of ebay for $110. I can custon tune the entire system and replace all of the wiring with 2 wires now. One for the tach and the other is a power wire. Very user friendly and easy to get parts for. I had problems with a miss that I couldn't get rid of before. Now I don't suffer from that. Not to mention that most coil manufacturers have high voltage coils made for GM HEI's.
