Hi.
i have a 79 ford f-250. i would like to restore it but.... my plans blew up in my face. i wanted to make a mudding truck out of it. but then i remeberd its not four wheel drive{yea hahhaha it was a free truck so i took it} so.. my ? is can i put a rear axle that i can throw duelies on it without lots of trouble.? it has a 4 speed many trany. granny LOW {first gear is like 3-6 mph} and another ? is any 1 selling a axle that can handle duels?
thanks.

You need to buy an actually dually axle with the correct width and drums for dual wheels. Check your local parts yard or ebay. There was a guy who posted in either this forum or the axle forum who might be parting out a truck with a 1 ton dually axle. The only thing you may need to do is change the width of the spring perches on the axle if it didn't come out of a 73-79 Ford.

Ya'll please correct me if I'm wrong, but I seem to recall that the '70's era F350 dual-wheel axles won't fit a stock '70's F250 frame - the F350 frames were narrower in the rear and the axle won't fit the wider F250 frame. Perhaps a '80's era axle would work, I'm not sure, you'll have to get the measuring tape out and go looking.

Probably the cheapest route would be to buy a set of spacers so you could mount the offset dual wheels on your truck. Remember, however, that while this might increase towing stability, traction, and safety, you're still limited by the weight carrying capacity of your Dana 60 rear. Just cause' you've got four tires back there it doesn't mean you can carry more weight.

That is correct, F-350's 2wd have a straight frame and the F-250 would have a "flaired" frame. The Dana 60 has about a 47 ish inch spacing on the spring pads (outside to outside) and the 70 has 43 ish. Hard to measure by yourself, but I tried, so you would have numbers to go by. There is just might be barely enough room to move the pads outbefor coming to the taper on the end of the housing.

Wieght carrying capacity has a lot to do with the axle rating, and the tires, in a given chassis. This is why a DRW can carry more than a single in the f-350's, becouse of the axle tire combo. It's the same with a 60. You can carry up to the axle/tire combo limit. If the 60 axle has a limit of say 7000lbs, and the single tires can carry 3600 lbs each, then all you can carry is 7000lbs becouse the axle is the weak point. Now say the axle is rated for 7000lbs, and the biggest tires you can get for the truck is 3200 lb rating, then the tires come up short, and duals would allow you to carry more.

NOTE: THIS ONLY HOLDS TRUE WITHIN A CHASSIS!!!! YOU CAN NOT TAKE A 70 AND PUT IT UNDER AN F-150 AND HAUL TO THE AXLES LIMIT!!!

I was gonna say the same thing as Pre80. You have to remember that the frame is still only rated for the F250. The F350 is pretty much a whole different truck. The only thing it really shares with the F100-250 is engine, trans, and sheet metal. Just about everything else is different and heavier duty.
