I am looking to buy a 1974 F-250. The engine sticker says it is a 360/390 360 cubic inch V-8 motor. How big is this engine? I didn't think Ford made a 360 V-8 but I'm not real familiar with the early 1970 models. Thanks...
The 360/390 series is a very common engine for that year. I am not really that familiar with them but they are supposed to be great engines. They were called FE engines (and - not to bring up a sore point - is supposed to stand for Ford Edsel).
The AC Cobra with a 427 was the same engine style (FE). If Carol Shelby used one they can't be bad!
I am sure there are a lot of people on this board who are FE experts, maybe they can give you more info...
hi
what do you mean: How big is this engine?
It's a common motor for that year and is a good one, if you like gas as well. they have made that engine for years and still make a variation of it in the new trucks!
The 360/390 is a family class. It means that it has the the same stroke but different bore... or vise versa.... They bolt up alike and mostly are the same engine. I personally like the 390 better maybe because it larger or the bore/stroke combination is better.
well i guess that's what genneral info i know.
From what Ive gathered around this site on the 360/390, is that the bore is the same, block (and heads i think) are the same and if you take a crank and pistons from a 390 they will fit right into a 360. Giving you more stroke and C.I.D. Is this correct guys?
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 20-Apr-02 AT 06:15 PM (EST)]you're right jbulson same block and bore, different stroke. different crank and connectingrods. these motors are pretty big and are sometimes considered a big block allthough they have nothing in common with the 429/460 big blocks. they're just that big. they have lots of torque
