91 4.0 hose question

A few months ago while I was working on some front engine gaskets, I noticed a hose about 3/8 diameter running from somewhere lower driver side up behind center front. It is not a vacuum line, it appeared to be some sort of fabric braided heavy duty hose, clamped to bracketry in several places. It had a very important look about it. It looked like some sort of oil line but external oiol lines are awfully rare.

I'm not having a problem, but I am curious, anyone know what it is??

Was is coming off the lower radiator hose and going to the bottom of a T fitting on the block just to the right of the water pump?

It might be, I should have paid more attention to it. Some sort of air bleed??

If it is coming from the lower radiator hose heres what Cooper said.

"Based on what you described, that little hose appears to be in parallel with your radiator. The pump sucks it in from the branch on the lower hose, then pumps it through the intake manifold, partially bypassing the radiator. About the only purpose I can think of is to increase the pressure on the suction side of the pump, hence increasing the pressure on the tips of the impellers, mostly to avoid cavitation there."

For further aid I posted some pics awhile back which shows the location of the hose in this thread.

Along with my creative solution to replace the fitting that was leaking that Ford dealer couldn't find or pull up in any diagram .

Could it be a line that goes from the driver's side valve cover to the big air induction hose? On the valve cover, it comes off the oil filler.

I've often thought that my Aerostar 3.0 v6 has "1 of 1" oddball parts installed from the factory, found on no other Aerostar, and not in any official Ford service manuel! Then you can't help but wonder: "some Ford engineer has this part for some strange reason". 9 outof 10 reasons, it's some kind of emissions gaget, mandated by the Feds, who are too rich, or retired, to drive an Aerostar! Dear Copper,

No it is not that air line, that one I can figure out. this one runs from very low beneath driver side of motor and disappears behind top center of engine. It is the type of hose one might expect to carry high pressure something. Cloth braid, very stiff, rather high quality. about 3/8 od. On a very old engine, I would think external oil line. strapped nicely to bracketry. Now I am gettting very curious. If you guys are unfamiliar with it, maybe the aliens installed it when it was beamed up to the Mother Wheel.

Beam Me Up Henry,

Ken

Hi Ken:

That sounds like the fuel line going to the fuel pressure regulator, not to Area 51 Or it could be the line going from the Canister Purge Solenoid Valve to the Canister.

Hi Ed:

What oddball parts do you have? I know I might regret this, but I'm just too curious

It looks like it could be a fuel line, does it run in front of the engine? I think you may be right. I didn't think fuel line because I thought that came up from the rear.

Hi Ken:

On the Aerostars, the fuel lines come up as a pair, from the frame on the driver's side, near the Power Steering Pump. Then they go over the top, in front of the driver's side valve cover, and end up on the fuel rail on the passenger side. I think one goes to the Pressure Regulator (inlet), and one on the fuel rail itself (return line).

On my van, the braids are metal, and the lines have Ford's spring-lock couplings as they come up the side of the engine.

Dear copper,

This is a single hose so I don't think it is fuel line. I have never seen any oddball parts. I will have to get under the darn thing and investigate. With as much experience as all of us have on this site, I thought this would be an easy one. So far, we have not ruled ot area 51, or maybe walmart when I bought tires there. could it be some tracking device or some other sinister thigamagig??

I don't have a '91 4.0L, but I know Aerocolorado does. I have been waiting patiently for him to tell us, but he must be on vacation

Darn it, i'm pretty familiar with engines and kind of know what belongs and what doesn't. this hose has me very curious now. it is not in my manual. it has a sort of hydraulic character. The engine compartment is so confined that it is really hard to track down.

Beam me up, Edsel

Could it be a metal tube for an EGR? I've seen them covered with insulating cloth.
