Well, dang it, I've been reading this thread and wondering just what 'ole Ken is referring to. I even went out and stuck my head down in the engine compartment looking for this mystery hose. I got grease on one ear and battery acid on the other but saw nothing unusual. I thought he was referring to the the metal braided gas lines that copper spoke of earlier. Ken's a sharp guy so I don't think he's a woofin' us about this. Is it possible one of the rear heater lines was replaced with a braided cloth style and re-routed? I sure don't see anything remotely similar to what he is describing.

Appreciate you thinking of me but I'm going to allow someone else the privilege. Our family 'Ford Fleet' is now up to 7, mostly mid 90's models and it has become a full time job to maintain them. At some point, you have cry 'uncle' and I think we've finally reached that time.
I really thought this would be an easy one, I certainly didn't mean for anyone to get dirty over it. Thank you for the effort, now I feel guilty. For penance I am going to try to repeat aerocolorado's experience and I will report back. Could it be the lubricator for the muffler bearing??

Ok, I found the top terminus. Directly behind the engine-end of top rad hose there is a fitting that goes into manifold, not a "t" fitting, just a 90degree angle into the manifold. Hose has crimped connector like hydraulic line and hose looks high quality.
Looked but could not easily see south end of hose but it heads under driver side front of engine. I would look further but I didn't want to get my white tux too dirty.
I think I know what this mystery hose is. I know that engine compartment pretty well after all the time spent messing around in there and this 'hose thing' was bugging me big time. Your most recent post about an 'elbow connection to the manifold' was the last straw because I couldn't recall any such feature. Back under the hood I went this evening. (I wore my special Aerostar mechanic's hat - the kind with the fuzzy ear flaps.)
I'm pretty sure what you are looking at is not a connection to the manifold but the factory formed "Y" connection for the heater hoses. The supply hose for the rear heater splits off just where you are describing (but not from the manifold). On my hose, just as it begins to pass alongside the engine on the passenger side, it is wrapped with, TA DA, that same cloth braiding you first described. I imagine the braiding serves as a heat sheild. What I suspect has happened, is that over time, your braiding has slid down until it is now on the driver's side - where mine has no such covering. All my hoses, save for the lower radiator, are original and I've never had to mess with any of the heater lines so I think the upper location of that braiding is correct. Since it is also right where the hose passes alongside the cylinder head it would need some additional heat protection.

AeroC. and others, is this "Misery on Earth" or what? Outside, underneath a car/van/pick-up. Pitch black outside, cold. The smell of snow in the air. With a trouble light in your hand, you see your breath in the cold night air. All of the underneath chassis parts, and metal are ICE COLD to the touch. You feel like the only person awake and outside on Earth, and to fix your ride so you can get up early and drive to work in a few hours. Of course, it will STILL be dark when you leave, cold, wintertime. Hey, there has to be a song somewhere in this, what do you think?!! I've worked in conditions as I've described, and it has been burned in my memory forever!! ED
I did a salvage yard trip yesterday to try to find some sun visors to replace the originals that have self-destructed (unsuccessful). I looked at at least three 4.0s and all have this hose. It is not a heater hose, way too small and does not go into a tee fitting. it is directly aft of upper rad hose connection. My only thought is that it is some sort of air bleed for cooling system. Hose is same size as your wife's pinky finger. But is definitely not a one-off assembly line fix and can not be a wal mart tracking device.
I give up. I am sorry for the blood and skin this has cost us. Thank You.
I have a '91 with the 4.0 engine that I am robbing parts from. I have a little more room to trace things out, and it looks to be a fuel line. There are two braided lines, one of which traces back to the fuel filter. The second line goes back behind the a/c compresser and ends up......I don't know. It is the crimped 90 degree fitting that Ken mentions. I don't know the purpose, other a fuel return line from the gas tank back to the intake manifold. I'm not sure of the purpose, but I am sure of the source.
One benefit of an engine rebuild is that with the engine naked I now know that the hoses in question were fuel lines. The hose is the return from the fuelpressure regulator. I thought the reg was aft drivers side, mine is front passenger side just behind the top radiator hose engine connection. Mystery solved.
