One of those pictures is of the transmission end of the engine, sitting up on jackstands, having a "crankshaft seal wear sleeve" installed. There appears to be a second, inner, mating surface machined into the block, complete with tapped bolt holes (and some plugs), presumably for an alternate application.
Since both the manual and automatic Ford transmissions bolt up to the outer surface, what do you suppose the inner one is used for?
Thanks for the URL, Kwik! I'm downloading some of the pics for future reference. The one of the CPS comes to mind, as it's very descriptive of the location. We'll likely use that one a few times to tell newbies.
Who would have thought that the cam gear was darn near as big as some engine's ring gear?
And, just for Kwik, there it was! A picture of a missing oil check valve! I wonder just how common this really is!
