I have a 1984 f150 with a 300 and I am putting a 1990 302 HO. I know I need the wiring harness to make the distributor vacuum advance work. Do I need a HEI distributor. Does a HEI distributor still need a coil or is it on top of the distributor.
Thanks
But to answer your question; the HEI distributor has the coil built into the cap. Are you going to run a carb - or go fuel injection?
I am going with a carburetor. I was told that I have to buy a wiring harness since my 300 does not have a vacuum advance and the distributors have a vacuum advance.
A vacuum advance is a "mechanical device" that is built into the distributor. It has nothing to do with wiring. It uses a vacuum hose from the carb or manifold to work.
If you have the fender mounted module, you can use the wiring harness on the truck to plug the new DuraSpark distributor into, then you would use the ignition coil you already have.
If you go with the Ford duraspark II, you need the harness. If you go with the HEI, you do not need the harness, you just need to run a new heavy wire from the HEI to the keyswitch.

I am not a big fan of the HEI dist. but in your case needing a dist. wiring & box the HEI is the best way to go.
The wiring needed for the HEI is really easy to make and using the relay.
