I have a 74 F100 the 390 in it broke completely and i was given a police interceptor with 4.6. I want to try and put the 1996 4.6 in my 74 F100.
I know already a few problems will be fuel, computer, and mounting. Need any info available. This is a project and have plenty of time to get it done. I just wonder if it is possible w/o ridiculous amount of work. Thanks for any info.
It will take major rework of the pass. side frame and don't forget about the wiring. I can't recall if the firewall had to be worked on or not. I recall this small amount of info because some one some where has installed a 4.6 or 5.4 in a 78 bronco and he had plenty of pics showing the progress so this swap is a major under taking but can be done.
To me that is a MORTAL SIN, you have a nice simple truck, why complicate it? I just bought a 74 for my new work truck so I could get rid of all that crap.
I have done only two engine conversions. One was putting or should I say stuffing a vette chevy 350 and a th350 into my 79 Toyota 4x4. It basically meant tossing everything but the diffs and a LOT of hearache from the wife. I did most of the work myself and it cost a small fortune. Was it worth it? Yeah maybe, but probably not. It is fast and fun but also very dangerous with 375 plus horsepower.
The other engine swap I did was putting a 460 into my 78 ford F-250 4x4 (C-6 Auto) to replace the 351M. That was WAY more straight forward and other than a little torching of the frame for the exhaust, it went very smoothly. Was it worth it? Absolutely! If I were you I would research this very carefully, a rebuilt 390 will give you way more torque, and you won't have to figure out what fits to what. As an added bonus you could probably tow it to the shop and have someone else put in a really sweet 390 and get their hands dirty for less that it will cost you to drop the 4.6 in it yourself.
Of course, conversion can be fun. This just depends on what you want to do, how you are going to use this truck, and how many hard earned dollars you are willing spend to make it right. Go for if that is what you want. If you are putting a 4.6 in it to save money cause you can get it cheap...Well you are going to be spending a fortune I can just about guarantee it.
Thanks, for the thread and for welcoming me to the site. Sorry for taking so long to reply. I still haven't made a decision. I need to investigate a little further. I should know by this weekend. Thanks again.

Just envision what it will take to graft everything from the PI over to the truck. Then consider that you can buy a 390 long block for about $1200 and have it running in 1 day....
