Steering Column 3 speed needs help.

Drove 1964 F-100 for test drive about 30 miles, the column shift hangs up when shifting from low to second not all the time but when it does sure dont feel safe. The 1964 shop manuel I have has nothing on the steering colum or shifting.Any suggestions will help, I think I put it back together the way I took it apart.

Check your linkage for correct connections.Mine had nails instead of correct pins and no spacers, after I put in the correct hardware it worked fine.

Hi Howard, You are dealing with 40 year old wear. Pull the shift lever towards the wheel when coming out of 1st, let the shifter drop down before shifting to 2nd. You are trying to push the lever from 1st to 2nd.

hope this helps

Agreed, I have had a couple of these and you always have to baby them through the first to second shift. Like John said, if you push it from 1st to 2nd they will hang, but if you let it drop into the back range before shifting into 2nd you will be fine.
