My 99 f250 cc v10 4x4 has two problems , 1st trip computer stopped working ( is there a fuse ? and where is it? ) and the 2nd is the low range isn't working again . Last winter the 4wheel drive didn't work , got that fixed but now low range is out . do you think the relays on the inner fender went bad again ? Needed it a few weeks ago to get a car trailer and lawn tractor out of mud and standing water.. Still had fun, just let the mud fly. Thanks for any help Fred p.s. taking truck on 150 mile trip and would that trip computer to work , the old girl needs to leave town , been home in town since gas went sky high . Fred
My trip computer went out could not find a blown fuse took it out of the overhead console and can see big burn spot on the face. Checked and have power in the wire. Have not replaced because ford wants 250 dollars for entire overhead can not get just control head. Hard to find in bone yard. 4X4 low can't help with that.
I encountered this problem recently in my '99 F350. It seems fairly common. After a ton of research (including a lot of old discussion on this board), I determined the following.
First, the dark spot on the upper left corner of the display is normal. I don't know what the heck it is, but they all have it. I'm guessing a light sensor is mounted there.
Second, there are two chips that commonly come loose from the circuit board due to the vibration of driving over the years. They can be repaired fairly easily if you are at all handy and have a soldering pen (NOT a gun). You can buy one at Radio Shack for about $10.
Third, I just finished this repair and mine now works great. I'm about to do a write-up with photos for the board, so if you want to wait a bit, you can follow my directions and photos sometime in the next week.
Finally, all my local dealers wanted just under $500 for a new computer (entire overhead unit) so I bought one on ebay for $175. It hasn't arrived yet, but if anyone wants it (for $175 :-) let me know - maybe I shouldn't post the repair instructions until I sell the thing
