I have bought or traded for a few vehicles over the years that had crap like that... when done you could eat of any part of the motor and drink the oil... I am serious I don't do nasty, rusty, oily or accept any sludge in my mechanical or electrical things...EVER!!

the miss in 4th. is caused simply because the engine is lugging more in 4th. and a miss will show up more

I would assume that the water probably starts boiling in the plug holes but since there isn't an easy way out for it the steam just condenses again as the engine cools. That may actually help to suck in more moisture. I'm not sure.
