Axle (wheel) seals

Subject vehicle: 2001 f250, 7.3... How much of a job is it to replace the rear wheel seal? I have had some people tell me that the seal is on the inner end of the axle. If so, do I have to remove the gears? If the seal is bad, will that allow water to come in? I don't do any off-roading, but we have had a lot of rain this month.. I do have some contamination of the oil, but the truck was flooded before I bought it. Thanks..

Truck has about 55k miles since I bought it, insurance company required that all fluids be changed before they sold it. I sure wouldn't have bought it if it were a gasser. I have had some problems, but I am not complaining about them. Simply asking if maybe I have contamination due to a bad seal, and how hard it is to replace the seal.

not very hard
you have to take all the brake stuff off behind the rotor and then pull the axle at the flange
then you have to have a special socket and pull the bearings and replace the seal
took about an hour
