Post Crank-crank-squeek...help!?

I have an 87 bronco 5.0 4x4 stick When I try to start the truck it goes crank-crank-squeek and continues this and will not start. Any ideas? Help! Thanks

Sounds to me like the roller clutch in the starer drive slips. I would replace the drive and
see if the problem leaves.

continues this and will not start.
What exactly does this mean? Is the engine still turning over, even though it's making the noise?

You say you had the starter checked. How did they test it? The current draw and the
fact that it pulls the drive in? I know of no way to test the roller clutch in the drive
without the load put on it by an engine.

You can easy enough prove it, have someone else crank it and you watch the fan.
If it cranks a little and the squeaking starts does the fan continue to turn? If not it is
the drive or the ring gear is spinning on the driveplate/flywheel. I would still bet on the drive.

I took it to a shop they connected a battery to it without a load and it worked. But the motor turned over teice and then squeek, turn, turn squeek- turn, turn, squeek until the battery wears dowm. the more charge the battery has the faster it does this and will not start. So you think to just change starter??!

That would be the quickest, and if you can't change the drive yourself most likely the
cheapest.
