Okay Bad,Here's the deal.

Because the Jury is still out on what the M really stands for

Pick a word that starts with M and use that for the definition.

What do you mean the jury is still out? Every publication I've ever read says the same thing. The M stands for modified. The 351M is a modified 400. I thought everybody knew that.

The M stands for nothing. Some thought it stood for mod and then some thought it stood for Michigan being where it was built like the Clevland- Cleveland Ohio Windsor- Windsor, Canada Ford just put The M there Stand it apart from the other 351s.

Ok- I understand everybodies frustration. I thought the M stood for modified, because I've read it in several places, and also that's what I was told by a 20+ year Ford certified mechanic. I just dug into this a little further on the internet. I'll admitt I was wrong in a way, but I was right in a way too. Here's the skinny on the M.
(a few lines from a Ford publication):

Beginning in 1977 Ford decided to offer the newer 351M/400 engines in its place. Again, Ford could have used the smaller 302/351 Windsor engine since it was being offered in the F-100, however, it was decided that since all F-150, F-250, and F-350 trucks were equipped with the heavy duty 390 in the 2wd trucks and the 360 in the 4x4 trucks that the torque laden 351M/400 would make an excellent replacement. The “M”, by the way, does not stand for anything. Ford only used the “M” designation to distinguish it from the 351 W (Windsor) and the now discontinued 351C (Cleveland). The “M” designation has now become know to mean “modified” or “Michigan”, even though the 351M was produced at both the Cleveland foundry and Michigan casting center.

Well if that is how it really was, then that would make SENSE that "M" is exactly half way between "C" (Clevland) and "W" (Windsor). I remember that from a thread a little while back

Hey, I'm just curious, If this topic irritates you guys so much, why not just say that nobody really knows what the M stands for but most people know it as a Modified and leave it at that. I have several and I don't flipping care what the M means as long as the dude at the parts store gives me the right stuff. Just a thought

All,
We have discussed this many times. I always seemed to learn something everytime. Not this time!
The 351M is a variation of the 351C. They are both in the "335" family. They share many parts: oil pump, water pump, heads interchange but intakes don't! The C is a race motor and the M is a work motor.
The "M" designates these motors from the "C". I've got it in writing somewhere but, cannot find it immediately. If you call it a "Modified" it only shows that you don't know the definitive history of Ford and are a hack like the other 99% of the big talkers in this world.

It might be interesting to some to go to this site and read this. It's called the history of the 351M.
