Just read your post....Don't want to hi-jack it but my problem is similar to yours....Runs and idles great when weather is warm then when weather drops, it idles high - about 1,500 to 2,000 rpm...any suggestions of what I should look for...Thanks you!

Check your Hot Air Intake system. be sure all the vacuum lines are in good condition, the thermostate inside the air cleaner works, the air-door moves freely and the vacuum motor still functions. Good luck.

The first thing I would suggest is get a manual for your truck. The location and routing of lines etc. can vary from model to model. Basicly, air is drawn across the exhaust manifold which warms the air. this is connected to the air intake of the air-cleaner by a large tube or pipe. The flap I spoke of closes off the entrance to the air intake of the air-cleaner so only warm air gets to the engine during it's warm-up period. This prevents stumbling. As the engine warms up, vacuum is reduced to the vacuum motor which starts moving the flap until it closes off the warm air and you only get cold. By now the engine is warmed up and you don't need the warmed air. Get a manual. Pictures and diagrams will help a lot. These parts tend to get lost over the years because most people don't understand how they work and what they do. Then they complain about how bad their car or truck runs. Good luck.

The high rpm when cold problem just sounds like when the choke is on and the fast idle is engaged. Once the engine warms does it go back to normal?

The poor idle could be lots of things, but since it is COLD related, I would tinker with the idle mixture screw on the carb...it faces the passenger front corner of the truck.
Cold weather causes the fuel/air mixture to vary slightly. You could be able to help it out. Keep track of how much and which way youre turning it, and no more than half a turn probably. Other than that, it's probably choke/idle related.

That tells me the choke is working properly...it's just a little dirty/corroded. Spray some carb cleaner on and around the choke plate and all the linkage.
