hello; like he said, pull the heads, clean the cylinders, dump brake fluid down the cylinders, waite a couple days, then take a hard stick of wood and a sledge hammer, hit each cylinder until you get it to move. good luck, wayne.
When I do this I do what yalicoln2 suggests (I work on blocks with the heads already off) but I also run a hone in the cyclinders I can get to (progressively) to remove the surface rust. Just make sure you have enough fluid in the bore to lubricate the hone.
I will also loosen rod and main bearing caps slightly in case one of them is seized up and preventing the assembly from rotating.
i would be carefull with brake fulid becuase i have been told if you leave it in there too long i will kind of weld the metal together. but i dont really know
Thanks for the advice on unsticking the motor. Based on what I am reading in other posts, I may just use this as a core and get a rebuilt 272 to drop in.
What mounts do I need to drop this in? My 6 is longer, so I am assuming I need to move the cross member back to mate up with the 8. Is that true, or what else do I need to do? Thanks.
You need a mount from a Y-8 truck. At least in my '54 that had the six originally, the person that installed the 272 used a seperate crossmember. I've never owned one with the six cylinder, but it looks like the actual frame location is different between the two.
WMJOE is correct that the Y uses a seperate cross member. The frames are already drilled for this member to be installed. The only thing that has to be removed is the small mount stub that is on the orignal 6 cyl cross member, the 6 cyl cross member remains as it too supports the radiator support.
I did one of these conversions from a 6 to a Y two summers ago. Radiators have different lower hose locations, generator and regulators are on the opposite sides between the two, bell housings are different, but do use the same mounting locations, gas pedal linkage is different but if you are going to put a 4 barrel carb then the 6 cyl linkage worked with no modifications.
That was gong to be one of my questions. I would reckon that the cross memeber is not an aftermarket part. I did notice the holes already drilled in the frame but I assumed I would move the six crossmember back.
I can't afford it now with the Christmas purchases we had this year, but I would be interested in the cross member later on.
