A Holley Story

Long Live the 460!

77 F250 Ranger XLT Camper Special 460, 4bbl Holley, C6 auto, D60 rear - 4.10s, front/rear swaybars, C/C, A/C (my tire guys old AIR powered industrial jack could not lift the FRONT of this truck!)

Question: How would one tell if the 4bbl Holley on their factory 460 is the stock part?

Story:
I used to take the local Ferry across the river every morning and afternoon for work, for about a year or so. Management decided with work becoming so busy, to add an afternoon shift and asked for volunteers to switch with a 50cent per hour bait raise. Of course I said yes, I like to sleep in, in the mornings. So, now on afternoon shift, everynight at 1AM getting off the river Ferry, me and a co-worker would ra(oops)-DRIve home on the highway(no cops at this time of night, I was young and.....un-thinking). Me in my above described truck, him in his 70-something Mazda RX-7 rotary engine that he had 15 grand into. We were pretty close for speed, to a point I should mention that raci(oops)-DRIving home on the highway meant driving on a four-lane part for a long way to where it necks down into a regular two-lane highway. We would always (AHEM)drive, to where it necks down and pull our moves there, me winning most nights, him scared something-less that his tincan might be shoved(I'm a good driver, he seemed to be scared of ANY vehicle bigger than his RX-7) PLOT TWIST. Most nights on the ferry I would also see this WHITE mid 80s Cutlass. About a month and a half of being on afternoon shift had loaded up my box pretty good with scrap lumber to the point it was heaping in the middle(all held in by ropes with nothng being able to fall out) I guess this Cutlass guy decided it was his turn to rac(oops)DRIVE with me on the highway on the way home. Three nights in a row, I see him in my rearveiw coming up beside me and I put my foot down, and we are side by side for all of half a second when the truck just gets up and GOES-RIGHT NOW!! I beat him everytime, hands down.... The fourth night, we are on the ferry, I am reading my book, Knock-Knock, on my window. Who's this?
"Hi, I drive that White Cutlass, I have to know, what do you have under the hood?"
"A stock 460."
mouth drops open..."really?..."
conversation continued as I found out he said he had 3 grand into his engine, I got out of the truck and went and looked under his hood, saw a lot of chrome, an aluminum intake, didn't really look all that hard, went back to my truck, lifted my hood
"thats a big engine...what was it again?"
"A stock 460"
rust and duct tape and leaves and all under my hood
he never challenged me after that night...
(talked to him a month later, he was driving a 90s Cavalier, his new(old) car)

I love what I can do with this truck
I love what I have done with this truck

We were cruising at 70-80MPH when my lead-foot would magnetically attach itself to the floor and the truck would GO - RIGHT NOW! and pull hard all the way to over 4400RPM(the one glance I dared during all those times and the truck still pulled after my glance)(lets put it this way - On a long and straight EMPTY six-lane highway, I would wind her out and she would wrap that speedo around til she read just under zero MPH)
Does that seem like the STOCK amount of power from a 77 460?
(I plugged some numbers into a formula and my TRUCKS top speed is 101MPH, those 4.10 rear gears)(It has seen top speed more than once!!!)

I want to unlock a few mysteries in regards to engine parts, hence my 4bbl Holley question of how to tell if it is stock or not

My first speeding ticket was in this truck - 133 Kph in a 80 Kph zone(and I was SLOWING down when the speed gun got me!!!)
It took me long enough to show my face in this forum, didn't it?

With MY screen-name, how can I NOT give you guys some entertainment with my first post in this FORUM

my 79 with a stock 460 on propane and 3.50 gears will do 190 kph, according to the po in his new durango following me on a top speed run. Ppl get out of the way when they see one of these trucks doing that kind of speed!

The stock Holley on the 460 is made for Ford by Holley and has a Ford part number stamped on the air horn. The 4 middle numbers will be 9510.

A little off subject, but I can identify with brown79. Years ago, I was 19 (1996), I took my dad's stock 83 F250 302 camping with a few friends. We had it loaded down with a truck camper and all our stuff. On the way home, I had pegged the 85MPH speedo at about 95ish coming out of the White Mountains on I93 in New Hampshire. It was pretty cool seeing cars off on the horizon moving out of the passing lane as they saw me coming. I guess they figured I'd never be able to slow down and they were probable right! Young and stupid is a lot of fun when you get away with it
