Tonight as I was driving from Reno to Sacramento, there was a drivetrain vibration. It happened from 50mph and up and if I released or pressed the gas pedal a little bit, the vibration would increase until I sped up or induced compression braking. I also noticed that going downhill in neutral, the vibration would continue and cause the gas pedal to vibrate significantly (if i rested my foot lightly on the pedal, it felt like a powerful massager). anyone have an idea of what this may be? I had the tires balanced this morning, so they shouldn't be causing a vibration. Thanks.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 02-Mar-02 AT 04:37 AM (EST)]I've had driveline vibes in the mph range you describe for 4 years (ever since I bought my truck.) A hard stop pulled my driveshaft apart and destroyed it. I replaced it with a new one, and my vibrations are gone! So have your driveshaft checked for balance, but the splines might be so worn that it just vibrates no matter what.
I once asked the old man the same question, and you know what his answer was? Dont drive over 50 mph. for real though, try putting your trans in a different gear and bring it up to the same ENGINE speed(rpm). If its not there its probably not the shaft. If it is there it COULD MABEY be the shaft. I say could because it could be so many other things. I once had a vibration that was only felt over 50mph that turned out to be a loose front shock in the bracket and a loose bracket to the frame. Did you have the vibration before the tire balance? i once had my tires balanced, left the shop and had a terrible vibration, took it back, they balanced them again and the vibration was gone. people make mistakes.
Put some blocks behide you tires. Put it neutral and crawl underneath and check everything for play. When mine did that I had a lot of play in the front drive shaft at the TC yoke and had to get it rebuilt and a new yoke.
Sounds like your universal joints on your driveshaft are going bad I would definatly check them for play and replace any that are not in good shape oh and make sure you greese them while your under there. hope this helps.
If you just had your tires balanced and now you have a vibration that you did not have before I would not rule tire balance out. Your tires would be my first guess. Have the shop re-balance them(they should do it for free)or take it to someone else you trust to double check them.
I had the driveshaft rebalanced and the problem is still there...vibration @ 45+ mph (really noticable @ 55-65). I'm going to get the tires balanced today or tomorrow and have them check out anything that might cause a vibration (also check for out-of-round tires). I also have a vibration @ 35-40 mph that is coming from the front end (steering wheel and front end shake). It feels like a leprechaun is jumping up and down on the front end while driving...like a wobble...wump...wump...wump (it's more of an up-down movement than side-side) and happens in-gear or out, accelerating, decelerating or braking. All of the suggestions so far have been extremely helpful. Thanks.
By the way, the engine (400), tranny (NP435), clutch, driveshaft and transfer case (NP205) seals/yokes are all new.
Hey, not really glad to say it but someone else is having this same problem. I notice mine about 60mph to 72. comes and goes in curves sometimes. Someone told me to shim the pinion angle on the diff. (lower the front end). Make any sense to you.
