Excessive Blow Bye

Hello,
Its me again. Got another problem.1978 F100 302 2bbl. I am getting allot of back pressure or blow back in my engine. It has been blowing oil out from under the oil cap. Replaced pvc and am getting ready to replace the oil sending unit. What else could be causing so much back pressure? As always any help appreciated. Nothing like some nice folks to help you when you need it.

Thanks, cooksey

I'm having he same problem with the 460 in my 78. Oil was comming out of the dipstick as well as the breather.

I was told that it could be bad rings. I did a pressure test on all 8 cylinders and found one to be extremely low. I haven't rebuild it yet so I can't verify that the rings are at fault. It does make sense though.

i had the same problem on my 78 with a 460 and it was due to the heads, all the valve guides were shot and this was leading to the problem. When they were fixed all was well except for that is upped the compression and now burn oil massively probably dues to the rings are getting badly worn

Lots of blowby isn't a good sign. It is usually the rings like the other poster found out. There are other clues that can help as in the overall condition of the engine and the mileage. Of course most of the time guys will post a question like this on here right after they bought the truck, which tells me whoever they bought it from knew the writing on the wall and got rid of it. The clues I was talking about are a little knocking on cold start-up in the morning, and low oil pressure when sitting on a warm in town traffic. But we have discussed this before, as I have been there, when short on time and funds, and the blow-by is making a mess and sometimes overwhelming the carb. I have taken the ventilation hose off the aircleaner and hooked an old piece of heater hose to it, and have run it down the engine compartment and let it puke on the ground. It will run longer than you think like this as long as you keep oil in it till you get enough money to buy an old Ford car out of somebody's back yard with a good engine, and swap it in your truck.
