I've herd that alot "filter minder dosen't work" I check mine with vacuum pump, works great. I thing this idea comes from the fact that the factory filter is so big it take a lot of dirt to cause the minder to move. These minder have been used on big rigs for years. I have three years and 45,000 miles on my first filter.
they tend to break off, they plug into a rubber grommet on the back of the air filter btw mine works well, blocked of the intake a little and reved it up just to check it
A air filter dose not wear out with milage, you could go 100,000 miles if it dosen't see too much dirt. This is the reson for the filter minder. Mine trips at 3 in. of vac. when I tested it with A hand vac. pump.
A slightly dirty air filter actually filters better than a new one, up to a point. The FilterMinder tells you where that point is.
Ford didn't put them on the truck "for their health". They cut such little things out (like rear fender liners), and they would have eliminated this, too, if they thought it wasn't really necessary. Think about it.
Most of us prematurely change our filters when "we think" they're dirty, not when they actually are.
Got my 2003 F-250 a couple of months ago, decided it was time for an oil change, and got to poking around the engine looking for what ever and found my Filter minder laying there - internals exposed, spring and yellow plastic indicator. I know it wasn't that way when I bought it, and no one's been under the hood since, so if it wasn't a stress failure of the plastic case, I have no idea what's going on. Of course it's Sunday, I need the truck tomorrow, so I did a fairly good repair wtih superglue, rubber cement, rubber tape, and tie wraps. All I'm missing is Duct tape and baling wire (or does rubber tape & tie wraps count).
It was cracked completely around the back edge where the clear plastic is attached to the black plastic with the sensor connector. I'm guessing maybe the weight of the wiring harness and connector may have fatigued the plastic. You all might want to inspect yours for cracks.
I think this is my first post here, so give me a break if someone's posted this before, I searched for similar thread and this was as close as I got.
texhawk, not to worry. Anything found in the bottom of a fishing tackle box, or an old cooler qualifies!
The '04 "overnighter" the dealership let me take home a year ago had a broken meter! This is a 15-cent part that you should watch for breakage and for its measurement. They sometimes become dislodged from cracks in the plastic housing. Kinda dumbs down the entire engine! Perhaps you can tape or replace yours.
A salesman didn't know what the dashboard icon was. It was the air filter minder
I had two 15" Donaldson's on my Pete.I used to change them around 100K.This was on a "road"truck. If I was in a dump truck that was exposed to a lot of dirt and dust I am sure it would have been more frequent.FWIW.

Yeah somehow though with high fuel prices i would rather change the air filter more often to maximize MPG's.
Lately i've been doing it about every 12k and it has more whistle with a fresh filter.
Buying them online makes them not too expensive.
