87 6.9 L I am trying to remove the oil pan so i can replace the gasket - it leaks like a siv! and while I am under there replace the oil pump. Is there any way to get the oil pan out without removing engine? I currently have engine unbolted and a bottle jack under the balancer so it is suspended between tranny and jack. But that only gives me a few inches and i hit the fly wheel in the rear and the front of the pan catches on the timing gear. Any suggestions. Eventually i would like to put a gasket kit in it. The truck has developed many oil leaks and i have recently found out all it has for gaskets is form-a-gasket! Not happy about that. Is it labor intensive to pull the engine? How long does that take? any advise is appreciated! Thanks Guys
RTV sealant is all the base pan came with from the factory. Why are you replacing the oil pump.Yes the pan can come out without removing the engine, however there is a long list of things that need to be removed to do it.
you may want to make sure the pan is not eroded from salt and old age. It seems to me that the pans have a habit of wearing thin in areas and not the pan gasket (sealant) being bad. Try getting hold of an engine crane to lift the engine right up against the trans tunnel to remove the pan.
I am replacing the oil pump because it is worth it to me to not have to worry about it, I already have the pan off and the guage shows low pressure above 1200 rpms and it sounds like there is a lot of noise comming off the valve train, lifters, etc. only when the guage goes down. I am aware that there are a lot of bad guages out there and that mine could be one of them but this way i don't have to worry about it. And i also can get one cheap from a buddy. Either way i still need to take the pan out and am having difficulties. any suggestions on how to remove pan are appreciated.
