np435 is stronger, and lower geared, shifts better. But...ive never seen a t-18 come up short from a 435 either. they are both VERY strong, and my t-18 shifts really well in my 86.
they made a 435 and t-18 for a long time.
if you are searching for one, look at the door codes A means NP435 and F means t-18.
a t-18 is what im putting behind my 460, but thats just my oppinion.
I had a T-19 in my 87 before I swapped in a ZF 5 speed. 1st is still a granny gear, it's just not as low as the NP435 or T-18 and I believe it was syncro as mentioned above. Otherwise, I believe it is about identical to the T-18. I still have it along with the bell housing, etc for a 460 4x4. It needs a rebuild though. One of the reasons I swapped in the ZF was because it had wicked bearing noise. It wined like it had strait cut gears and rumbled when idling in neutral. I drove it like that for 2 years though and it still shifted fine and never jumped out of gear.
Is it normal for the t-18 to whine??? Because I hear really bad in 1st, 2nd. and 3rd on my truck
yes and no (don't you like those answers? )
the 4 speeds with any spur gears at all are louder than transmissions with all helical gears, so you will hear them. old T98's and T18's with Reverse up and right can be pretty loud. At what point normal gear noise becomes a symptom of a problem is hard to say without hearing it.
Just to let you know both NP435 and T-18's were used in Fseries trucks all the way up to 1989 (at least)...I have 2 1986 F250's one with NP435 and one with T-18. Other than the fact that you can't swap parts between them. I can't tell any difference. Jeep owners I'm told seem to try to get T-18's for change outs but I don't know why they couldn't also use NP435's?
Either choice is a good one. What it boils down to is which one you come across first. Just make sure the bearings and seals are good, fill it with the proper oil and run it like you stole it.

Because Jeeps also came with the T-18's, but with different input shafts. The Ford T-18's are much easier to find and parts are cheaper, so ones looking to do conversions look for the Ford T-18's and use the Jeep bellhousings. Everything bolts right up, but they have to use a Ford clutch disk/pressure plate
