good battery, no electrical

1984 B2, 2.8L, 5 speed. I had some wires land on the exhaust manifold, as usual they melted and shorted. Since then I cant get any electrical anywhere. So far I have tested the battery (good) and the alternator fusible link (also good). I have replaced the 2 fusible links that are just behind the battery. Before I go any further, I am led to believe that the issue might be in the starter relay. Is this possible? I thought that relay had a bypass for the rest of the electrical. Would a bad starter relay kill all electrical? Or just kill power to the starter?

No electrical load wires go though the starter relay, they just attach to the Battery side of the relay. If you have any wire other than the big one going to the starter on the starter side of the relay you need to move them to the battery side of the relay, other than the one or two push-on ones.

Your problem is not the relay unless it will not crank.

No, the relay can not stop the power going to the rest of the truck.

It can only kill it to the starter.

Thanks, thats what I thought. I have since found 2 more fusible links, both good, one more to go to eliminate those.

Here's a diagram that may help.

The battery is in the middle of the diagram. Power flows through link "c", and then up through "d" and "e". The yellow wire feeds the ignition switch.

Yup, thats the same diagram I'm working with. Too dark to continue today. The only thing left to check is the regulator, but I have my doubts about that being the problem. It would seem a double check on link "e" is in order.

Well, my face is a bit red this morning. I didnt mention that the wires that shorted were for an ammeter that I had hooked up years ago. Figure it out now? I did. When I cut the burned wires out I killed the power to the truck. The ammeter was hooked up across the starter relay and the wires that power the truck. I connected the wires back to the relay and, hey, it runs again. Feel free to laugh and call me names. I did that too.
