Question F-150 Longevity

I'm trying to talk my wife into letting me get a new (probably 2005) F-150. (I know what your thinking - who wear's the pants? - I know - I know! -one step at a time) She's open to the idea but she wants me to get some research on how long the vehicle would last.

Does anybody know of where I might be able to get some facts and figures on how long the F-150 lasts? In order to get this vehicle, we'd be getting rid of an '02 Volvo S40, and Volvo has a great track record on longevity. Can anybody help me? Point me in the right direction maybe? Also - what about safety. Does F-150 have a good safety rating?

Many Thanks.

I currently have an '04 F150 but don't know how long it will last. That would depend on the care it gets and the wear and tear factor. I traded a '91 F150 for my new truck. That lasted 13 years if that's any indication.

I believe the current F-150 has an excellent crash test rating. And in 2002, the year of your S40, Ford already owned Volvo. Essentially, you currently have a Ford....

For longevity, check the '77 in my signature.

I sold my '89 F250 after I bought my '05 F150. My old truck never went back to the dealer for repairs or recalls. It did have the 7.3L diesel and was still running strong at 170,000 miles when I sold it. Except for regular maintenance like oil changes, fuel filters, shocks, tires, exhaust system, I replaced the water pump, radiator, and the clutch.
I can only hope my new truck is half as reliable... I will be happy.

We won't know for a while. Not too many of the new F150s have a lot of miles. We'll see in 2-3 more years when these trucks are at higher mileage how they last. From what I understand, if you take care of the older F150s they run forever, but that doesn't mean our new ones will.

If your looking for a statement on the Ford F150 longevity. Go visit a few construction sites in your area. Look at the older trucks in the lot. You will see that most of them are Fords. Contractors and construction workers put their trucks through the most rigorous usages of all. Seeing is believing!

Well I had a 93 F150, quality built trans and 351Windsor engine. As far as the new F150's, the crash rating is excellent due to the frame and components being so strong. However, the same drivetrain quality Im not so sure is still there. I have never owned a mod 4.6 or 5.4 motor and honestly Im not impressed with it. Id rather have the power and reliability of an older windsor engine. Im not so sure its the actual engine thats the problem, its the overuse of electronics to control the engine that could be the issue and really needs to be tweaked to get the most out of the engine. This is coming from an Electrical Engineer, so I am not in any way afraid of electronic controlled systems, but in this case it could be more of a hindrance than anything else. For instance the "drive by wire" drives me crazy and lacks the throttle response I really like.

Other things used are poor quality tires such as Hangook and General, which can be replaced, but should come with the truck. Plastic feel of interior, dash, etc and seat covers that stain if you look at them wrong. In all honesty, Im sure the truck will last as long as you are willing to put up with it.

Well......... the obvious........ who cares on the LONGEVITY!

It looks like you kept your VOLVO for a WHOLE 4 years. (i'm pretty sure the truck will make it that long)

I would think any vehicle built after 1990 should get you 15yrs/150,000 miles with no MAJOR problems. (always exceptions)

Convince her that you'll save a ton of $$$$ on brakes/tires/repairs, as I'm sure the VOLVO shop/parts are alot more expensive!

FYI - I'm want to get rid of the Volvo because when we bought it, it was for my wife. We had no kids at the time. Now we have two and she drives the minivan and I'm stuck with a car that wasn't bought with me in mind.

Thanks for the information. Very helpful.

I spoke with a gentleman at a UPS store the other day. He asked if I had the gray F-150 in the parking lot. He has an 04 F-150 supercab with the 5.4L and has almost 70k miles on it. All this guy does is drive and he says he has been very happy with it. I guess he trades every couple of years because he has over 100k miles by that time. That's a lot of driving!
