I have a 79 302 2wd. I took out the C4 and put in a C6 which was out of a mid 80's van(I think). I kept my flex plate.
I am having problems with my starter. The flexplate teeth are hitting the starter teeth in the center, but only about 1/16" .Once the tips of the starter gear are gone, it will not turn the motor.
I was told that on the flex plate the C4 has 157 teeth and the C6 has 164.
I compared the two at the auto parts store and the only difference I could see was that the C6 maodel was shifted a little more toward the tranny. The diameter and teeth appeared the same.
I compared various starters and could not tell a difference in the nose.
I know that some type of an offset gear starter was made. Could that be the problem?
I pulled the flex plate, it was 164 tooth. I replaced it anyway, and also replaced the starter gear. Still the starter gear is barely engaging the ring gear teeth. I appears that I need a larger diameter starter gear. Any ideas?
