David Blaine performs a similar illusion, and he uses the sheet of paper over the glass. That obviously plays an important part in the trick.

I don't know, watching a filmed illusion always ruins it for me. Especially after watching one of those shows where they explain how the tricks are done. In one trick they had a big canopy over a bulldozer or some other piece of industrial equipment they were going to make disappear. The amazing secret was that the witnesses were paid shills and during the commercial break, they moved the canopy and drove the bulldozer out.
