I am replacing the radius arms on my 95 F150 and I am having problems getting the lower bolt on the axle end out. It is 1 1/8 inch bolt and I have already broken a breaker bar and a ratchet (both 1/2" craftsman), using a piece of 3' pipe. I think the bolt had some kind of threadlock on it from the factory and I doubt it has been removed since it was originally put in. I've been squirting PB Blaster on the inside of the axle arm to help loosen it.
The question is, what tool should I buy next to try to remove this pesky bolt? I am looking at either a 3/4" drive breaker bar/ratchet + socket (craftsman) or an Ingersoll Rand impact wrench (model 231, I think). I'm worried that if I buy the impact wrench, it might not have enough torque to remove the bolt. Is that reasonable, or is the impact likely to zip out the bolt with no problem? I don't want to buy it if it won't work because I won't use it much (live in a townhouse and don't want to annoy the neighbors).
Thanks for reading this and I look forward to your thoughts.
If you are talking about the radius arm to axle bolt, there are 2 nuts. 1 above the lower spring & 1 below the perch. Remove the top nut with open end through the spring. Remove spring & perch to reveal lower nut.
Job is accomplished. I bought a 3/4" drive breaker bar and socket and used a cheater bar. Bolt came out without too much protest (I don't know if it was due to the PB Blaster that worked on it all day or to the bigger wrench, or both).
