93 F350 ?'s

I'm looking at buying a 93 F350 diesel dually. I haven't gone to see it yet, but the price seems good. I just had a few questions about it.

1. I've heard that all 93's were turbos, and I've also heard that only some of the 93's were turbos. Which is true? If it's not a turbo, how gutless will it be in stock form?

2. It's a manual trans. How well do they stand up? I think it's a 5 spd but am not sure.

3. Is there anything I should be sure to check about this truck before I buy it?

Thanks

Welcome to FTE.

In 93 the 7.3 IDI was offered in the turbo and non turbo form.
Neither engine is gutless.
The turbo engine is a lot faster than the non turbo engine.
The non turbo engine will pull the same amount of weight as the turbo motor will, just a lot slower.
The 5 speed (aluminum housing) is not as tough as the 4 speed ( cast iron housing), but both are better than the automatic.
The biggest downfall of the 7.3 engine was cavitation.
This was prevented with the use of SCA (Supplimental Coolant Addative) which comes in two different forms.
If you are buying from a private individual you may be able to find if SCA's were used and which one was used.
If you are buying from a car lot, chances are they will have no clue what you are talking about.

Thanks for the info. I just talked to the wife of the guy who's selling it and she said it's got 380,000km (about 238,000 miles), and she thinks it's a turbo. How many miles do you figure the truck should be good for? She also said it just had a motor vehicle inspection(government) done, so if nothing else that means it's safe to drive as is.

My 93 have 350,000 miles and is still running strong. So long as it was properly maintained (ie SCA's mentioned in Daves post above ) and runs good it should be fine for many more miles (or km). If it has the turbo you'll probably be happier with it's performance.

I have a 94 IDI Turbo and I love it. I hardly drive it, I got it for towing my travel trailer. It does a great job for a Ford
