Ok ive got a D-44 on my 76. Now there is this bracket that keeps the axle for moving around when turning, it attaches to the axle on the passenger side and goes up to the frame where it hooks up to a bracket on the drivers side. there is a bushing missing where it hooks up to the bracket. I cant figure out what its called. I took it to Advance and they didnt know what it was. they tried selling me this bushing that looked right but was too big. what is this thing called?? Am i stupid or something. It sure does wander without it.
Had the same problem on my '76 and the parts shops were lost as to what it was. It is called a track bar and yes it will wander all over the road if a bushing is bad. you can get the bushing from several places including jcwhitney. piece of cake to install
Mike: I worked with the information you provided and, looking at the diagrams in the Ford shop manual, from what I can tell it appears you're looking for the radius arm "insulators".
Per the manual, Working outward from the radius arms there should be:
an "insulator 38240" that is wedged shaped to conform to the axle.
The axle itself.
Another insulator 38240.
and a "cap 3405"
Then four bolts and lock washers
The book says the cap and radius arm are matched sets on both sides.
Thanks a ton guys, I know its not the radius arm i just got new bushings for those. The track bar sound exactly like what it is. Thank yall so much for the advice, I dont know what id do without this site.
Now that we've solved that problem, what do you call the donut-like bushings on a 2wd front axle that are at the body attach point of two bars that extend back like braces to keep the suspension from moving backward? Was that a long sentence or what? I replaced them years ago, and now the auto parts store only uses word descriptions (and they are not under "donuts".
