driveshaft spacer

driveshaft spacer

my 03 f250 clunks when leaving from a dead stop , dealer said it needs some kind of spacer, just wondering if anybody else had this problem and how hard is the repair, dealer said part was around $200.00,thanks

all you need to do is pull the drive shaft out and put some grease on the splines on the output shaft from your trans. be sure to mark driveshaft to put back in the same way. a tie strap will hold the boot on that has the metal strap that you will cut to get the boot off. this will stop your clunking. good luck

The steelership must be reading this forum. They got the fix for the wrong problem. Space the drive shaft for a vibration, grease the splines for a clunk.

The dealer might be talking about shimming the carrier bearing down if you have a two-piece shaft. Don't know what other kind of spacer he might be talking about.

I think BIGRED7.3 has the right idea, especially the splines in between the two halves of the shaft.

do you use the same kind of grease as you would for the fittings?

By the way, if it needs the carrier bearing shimmed down then just pick up some flat stock steel (1/8- 1/4) and make the shim yourself. The dealer wanted $40 for it here and when he handed me the package all it had in it was two pieces of steel and directions. What a rip off. I made it all myself for less than $5 dollars, including new bolts, if they are needed.

Any good chasis grease will work.
