hard clutch

I bought a 1994 ranger 4.0L 5 speed a few months ago. Compared to a couple of other ranger trucks, I noticed that my clutch was almost twice as hard to press. Looking at some paperwork in the glove compartment the clutch was replaced about a year before and owner complained about a stiff pedal, the trans was removed again but no problem was found, that is what the paerwork said from the mechanic. The clutch does not slip although most of the time it seams that it does not disingage well since it needs some effort to put in first gear at a stop light. I hate to pull the trans just to see what is wrong without knowing what is wrong. Any sugestions??? Are there pressure plates that are harder to press than others???
Thank's guys.

Some can be harder, but you could also have a problem with the master or slave cylinders. Mine is a PIA to hold in at a stop, and it is at times hard to get into first at a stop, but ya learn to live with it. I have one of the autozone lifetime clutches and pressure plates in mine with new master and slave cylinders so it just might be the nature of the beast.

Actually trying to define hard is a relative word since I and others dont know how you are built muscle wise and what is actually perceived by you. If you can mange the shifts and it runs well I would just try to see if you can overcome the stiffness. As to the 1st gear problem many times it will be related to the pilot bearing/bushing and wear on the mainshaft. Only way to fix is pull the trans or shift into 1st while coasting in to the stop or let the engine idle and maybe rev it up just prior to trying to engage. If I get caught just as the light changes and I have just dropped out of gear I have to wiggle the shifter down towards 2d and then it slides right in. Its just a technique I had to develope for these cases.

My dad and I both owned rangers, mine was a 3.0L, his was the 4.0L 4x4. My clutch was rather soft compared to his, his, if you weren't careful would put your knee through your teeth, it was soooo tough to push in, but I learned to live with it when I drove his truck, no biggie, just takes some getting used to, not all clutches are the same, I've been told mine was the easiest to push in by almost anybody that has driven it. Then others I have seen are rougher than my dads was.
