Fred, that's assuming he has a 3-valve... I was under the impression that the E didn't get the 3-valve right away, if at all...
didn't monsta say his new beast even had a 2valve? seems only the super duty got the new motor . maybe i'm wrong, just seems 2 people have said they only had 2 valve motors in their vans and ex's.
2v V10 vs. 3v V10 97-2006 all use exact same block and unless there is something weird in the Van Chassis I believe they all use same pan. I refuse to believe the 3 valve head accounts for a 1 quart difference.
I think over time they refined the dip tube and dip stick length and that is what we are seeing in the different refill levels in the books.
I know that on level ground, with a typical suspension that sits nose low and a dip stick port to the rear, well past the center of the engine, that the oil level in the pan is sloping forward. My proof of this is to fill to top of dip stick full hash marks on either my assassinated 01 2v (when I had her) or my 05 3v on level parking pad. Later, in my drive way with a slight incline my truck and engine sits level to earth. If I check the oil on that parking spot, I get a different reading of slightly higher on the dip stick indication over full.
My 01 took slightly less then 6 quarts for a indication on top of dip stick hash marks and this 05 takes slightly more then 6 quarts on a level pad. I think the 1/2 quart difference is accounted for by the different stance of the two trucks. The Platinum was more level F250 short bed and the 05 F350 KR long bed sits MUCH higher in the rear.
When I check it at my favorite gas station it is always low because the refuel pad is more nose low. If I check it after the truck wash same station ten minuets later on a more level asphalt section it is right on the money. Took me a while to figure out that several inches off level can make quite a difference in the dip tube reading.
My guess is that 1/4 inch low or high doesn't matter and it all depends on if you added a lift to level the front or when you do a periodic check the level of the ground is different.
I believe that more then 5Qt and less then 7Qt is the correct amount... how is that for being very precise!
That's why i was a bit nervous with this '05 it was sitting nose up, meaning most the oil shoulda been to the back where the dipstick was. And to have it just barely showing.
it was not me.
but my book does say 7 qts. the thing that bugs me is after i run for about 10 mins and recheck it still needs a extra 1/2 qt to reach full. and it stays at that level till i change it.
