Computer (Chips) Memory Saver

I recently read a reference to a tool that saves the memory on vehicle computer chips when the battery is disconnected. Through search I found some at Snapon Tools. Before I purchase such a tool I am soliciting comments from the Board on the use of this tool, any model, any make. Comments?

I have know two pepole that have used one and I believe it worked as advertised.

You can make one yourself with a 12V power outlet connector (the male end) some wire, a 9V battery connector and a 9V battery.
Just make sure you get the polarity right and it should do what you need.

Most every vehicle computer I've dealt with the in past saves its settings to NVRam. In these cases the settings take some deliberate effort to erase beyond simply disconnecting the battery. Now I keep reading where a Ford person "resets" his computer by disconnecting the battery. Are you guys sure that that's all it takes? If so which settings are erased? Obviously not all of them.

I used to do all the minor maintenance on my pickups, and I have a garage full of tools. Which I feel allows me to say that with today's "Electronic Vehicles" I find there is some risk in not knowing what memories will be erased by disconnecting the battery. I would like to avoid doing some minor electrical maintenance then find out my tranny shifts in less than desired manner, or my rig has adopted bad emissions. This is why I asked the comments of the Board. i.e. Many know more than one.

I'm sure we're all garage heads to one extent or another or we wouldn't be on this forum. I am simply asking what precisely is reset by disconnecting the battery. Personally I think I'd like to know the facts before spending $$ on a tool that may not be necessary. Just sayin...

Frito
If I knew which Memories are affected I would not be posting my question that has the same effect as your question. The only difference is that I am willing to purchase the inexpensive tool, a Memory Saver, to avoid any unseen proglems.

My search was really not if the tool is needed, but rather, has anyone on this Board used the Memory Saver tool? With my last pickup I had a programable tuner from Kenwood what would blank out if I disconnected the battery. The cost of a Memory Saver tool would be well worth the cost just to avoid the time and coding it took to reprogram the tuner.~~~~~The tuner would flash the name of the artist that currently was playing on each track, and with over 65 CD's with 12-16 tracks each, that was a lot of programming.
