I have a '69 I-6 (300) with some mild mods (header, intake, carb). I now am running with the original 3-on-the-tree transmission. I know some of the later 70's models had a 3 speed overdrive transmission. I would like to do a swap. What years had o/d transmission available and is it just a basic swap? Is there anything else I should know?
Your after an AOD tranny (the 4.9 and SBF use the same bolt pattern)
According to the ford-trucks knowledge base, these were put in the following:
1985-1991 Bronco. 1981-83 F100. 1987-93 F150. 1985-90 F250 4X4. 1981-93 F250 2X4. 1983-86 LTD. 1983-93 E series.
Keep in mind there was an AODE, found in the later models listed, you don't want that one.
Ford had optional 3 on the tree with overdrive as far back as the fifties for cars and trucks. The transmission is a direct bolt in with the possibility of driveshaft alteration. You would of course need the related wires, relay, kickdown switch, and lockout cable.

You asking about a manual or automatic? I ask because years ago my father had a 69 or 70 Ford van (a Chateau Club Wagon, actually) with a 300 inline 6 and a 3 speed manual with a column shifter. Dad ordered it with all kinds of heavy duty truck parts underneath (the heavy duty clutch had a level of pedal pressure that was the stiffest one I've ever driven), but it had no power steering, no power brakes, no power anything, actually, and no radio at all. Dad was funny that way.
I learned to drive a stick on that old van. I have many fond memories of it. It's the reason I ever wandered into this forum in the first place.
Dad's van didn't have an overdrive. Knowing Dad I suspect he would have gotten one if it had available at the time, so I'm guessing that Ford wasn't selling them by the time he bought that van.

Again Ford had manual 3 speed transmissions with overdrive as far back as the fifties. I happen to own a 65 that is 100% stock overdrive.
I think the overdrive trucks should command a substantially higher resale value than the regular 3 speed. Not because I own one but more because of owning one I realize how very unique and interesting the whole overdrive setup is with various switches and solenoids to make it all function properly. I freak people out with my passing gear in third all the time. People have forgotten about them. There were never a whole lot of these I think. I only recall running across a few through the years. One was a 65 Galaxie with the OD and a 390 4bbl. Now that was cool!!

The trans you are asking about came in about '78 to '86. It is patterned after the top loader 4 speed. Your '69 might have the motor too far back to use a floor shifter.
I have this trans in my '85.
It should bolt up in place of the 303 3 speed you have. The drive shaft might be an issue, but that will be easier to fix than if the shifter is back in the cargo area.....
Unless your set up is worn out, I'm not sure this will be an improvement.
Pics, some info:
Well, I can't post the David Kee toploader site right now, but do a search for "David Kee toploader" and you might find his site. Look for ID charts, and imposters.
These trannys were made by Tremec for Ford. Some were adapted to internal rail shifters, some were side mounted linkage.
