I just purchased a used factory instrument panel for my 1976 F150. It has the oil pressure gauge and ammeter gauge, while mine currently has the idiot lights. I know I need to change the oil sending unit, but what do I need to do for the ammeter gauge? If anyone has a diagram or knows which wires go where, I would really appreciate it.
I'm not sure exactly how to do this. I'm pretty sure that a couple of the harness will need to be changed. The ammeter 'operates' with the use of a shunt located in the harness between the alternator and the voltage regulaor. I put operates in quotes because a miscalculation on Ford's part caused most of the ammeters in the mid-70's trucks not to work. The shunt value is wrong and will not divert enough current to the meter.
I saw one today with the shunt mounted to the Printed circuit on the back.
I am still trying to figure out if there is any resistance diference in the harnesses between the two.
I would think NOT.
There is a difference how many pins there is on the connector though(4 I think).
