I would say that he has 3.55. A change to 3.73 would improve drivability with the 32's. 4.10's would kill the top end, but make it a monster getting out of the hole. Fuel mileage would also suffer with the 4.10's.
Ford never made a 3.10 ratio in either the 8.8" or the 9" axle that I know of.
Since a 9" wouldn't have been factory issue in your 1990 truck, are you sure that's even what axle you have?
If better gas mileage is what you want, consider that the cost of changing out both the front and rear axle gears is going to be close to $1200. How much gas does that buy you? Remember you're driving a 5000 lb truck around regardless of what gears are in it.
go to 35" narrower tires and rims on 16 or 17 rims, gives about 10% drop in cruise rpm, less tire wind and road rolling resistance=better fuel mileage. save the wide 32" for weekend boy toy playing in the mud. run the tires at near max pressure.
far cheaper than changing 2 r/P sets and more adaptable.
I'll get skinny 32's or 31's before next winter. I'd probably need a lift for 35's, unless I got really skinny ones, otherwise, they'd still fit under the wheelwells, but they'd rub the frame like crazy. I'm getting a little frame rub from the wide 32's.
Thanks for the gear help guys. I probably wont throw in gears, I was just wondering what gears would help me cruise better.
