Thumbs up E-350 V10 mpg

This was the first trip driving my 2005 E-350 V10 without towing something...drove 55mph from SC to Chicago; 700 miles. Got 17.4 mpg! Only got 17.2 on the return.

Very nice!

I usually see 13-13.7 mpg, but got 15.5 on a long ride.

BTW...how the hell did you do 55? I do 70 and I'm the slowest ride on the highway.

I NEVER drive over 55, for about 12 years now...sure is more relaxing. On the trip to Chgo, we were probably afforded a little more consideration due to the obvious nature of my wife's Black Rolls (wheelchair).

On my 02 with the V-10 I normally get just shy of 15 mpg. My only problems have been the front brakes/rotors. I am on the third set rotors and with only 47K miles on the thing.

Ouch! Whats up with that, I haven't heard of anyone having problems with E350 rotors. My 150 eats rotors but then I tow alot and we all know the 150 could use more brakes.

My 150 has warped rotors, too.

All,

Two points, first is that my V10-equipped '03 E350 gets 15mpg +/- 1mpg no matter what I do (I limit myself to ONE "V10 moment" per day)...

Second, directed at Obsidian and not an attempt to hijack this most excellent thread, what brake pads are you using? How are the back brakes? Could there be a problem with the proportioning valve front-to-back? I'm just shy of 80K, and still have lots of life left on the original pads...

The brakes are Ford, the rear are just fine, no problem, and showing very little wear.
I have had two E-150 vans before and normally got at least 90K before necessary to have any brake work done. This is what makes be unhappy with the 02 350/V-10 SD EXT. It is not used for a tow vehicle, used almost like an RV. Long trips/camping usually lasting several weeks and anywhere from 3-10K miles. Open road is not something that uses up brakes. With the first set Ford gave me the runabound. Had go to the Dispute Settlement Board to get any help. Ford (many dealers) kept saying that is just the way they are. The ones on the front now have about 10K and were out of my pocket. I just had to have the front turned several weeks ago. The last time thery were replaced almost all the brake parts were replaced to see if that would help.

I had rotor problems on my Crown Vic. I found that turning rotors was as much as the cost of replacing them and didn't last as long. So far, no problems with the rotors or pads on my E-350.

Around town, I can't limit myself to only one V-10 moment/day. I just love the sound of that 10 banger winding up - especially in the Tow/Haul As* mode.

That is great mileage for a van. I have an 05 e-350 diesel with 4.10 gears and get 13.7 on the higway at 75+ mph. I guess it would do a lot better at 55 mph.

My van has the 3.73 in it, seems like no mater how I drive, still get the same MPG. Don't often go at 75 for any lingth of time. I feal more comfortable in the van somewhere around 60-65. This makes long distance driving a lot easier and am sure it helps the milage.

'05 6.0 E350 with 3.55 rear, 75 on a trip to l.a. gets 15-16, 70 or less gets 18, just had front rotors turned by ford due to pull, now they say a ball joint is bad, makes me wonder.

Has anyone tried using frozen rotors ?( www.FrozenRotors.com ) . There biggest sellers are for the super dutys. We use them on our squad cars and are getting twice the life out of rotors.

reno94,

Cool (pun intended...) product. This isn't meant to sound offensive, but for more than twice the price of a "standard" rotor I'd sure hope I'd get twice the life. Does their performance warrant the cost?
