Since I've had the truck, I have never replced the water pump. I don't know if the PO did. When I last drove the truck I got a brief squeal from where I thought was the front of the motor. BUt when I got out to listen, it went away.
I used the truck this morning to ride in to work, (50 mile commute), and when starting off from a dead stop it would squeal again. It got worse after I stopped for gas, it almost didn't quit when I was getting on the highway, but eventually quieted down.
Isn't there a telltale squeal for when the water pump or the bearing go?
That might just be the belt, check the tension and see if the sides of the belt are glazed up. when the pump is worn out you will drip some coolant out of the weep hole.
While you are checking the belt, go ahead and slip it off the W/P pulley. Then try to wiggle the pulley. If it is loose, then the pump is on the way out. If you are running a fan clutch, be sure it's the W/P shaft that is moving and not the clutch shaft. The weep hole under the shaft is also a good place to look. The hole is there so that any coolant that gets past the seal won't get into the bearing and wash the grease out. It is not that unusual for coolant to sometimes seep past the seal. So if you see some dis-coloration down there don't freak-out. If it's a steady drip, that's another thing. Good luck.
