Smile Headers Arrived today

Yaaahoooo The new Ceramic coated Doug Thorley Headers arrived today to replace the leaky old manifolds on the 93 F-250. The next few days I plan on removing the inner wheel wells and wheels to gain better access to all bolts and nuts and apply liberal amounts of PB Blaster to all threaded and machined conntections. Hopefully if I don't get in too big of a hurry I can get everything off without breaking anything off in the head.
Any other suggestions for the R&R?

Thanks, Rich

I put headers on my '93 f250 5.8L. I bought the pace setter shorty headers. They were an okay fit, the o2 tube didn't match up with the stock location on the manifold. The best advice I can give you is to buy the best header gaskets you can get your hands on. The paper gaskets that manufacturers send out with headers are completely WORTHLESS. I had to reinstall my headers with good gaskets after trying my luck with the paper gaskets. This is the second vehicle that I have installed headers on. I also had to replace the paper gaskets on the camaro that I had.

The camaro header gaskets got upgraded to copper.

On my truck, I called summit racing and they sold me a newer gasket, some sort of synthetic, supposed to be better than copper. I still haven't taken the time to get them 100% tight.

On a lighter note, the headers make a big difference in power. Sounds good too!

Thanks for the tip! I haven't even taken them out og the box yet as things tend to grow legs once out of the box around my place. I should have mentioned that this is a 460 so it is bound to be a bit tighter. The headers are a full set that includes "y" pipe and takes me all the way to the cat. Hopefully things will match up pretty well. For the price I would hope that the gaskets are quality. I will have to check them out tonight.

I got them directly from Doug Thorley. I dealt with Randy Miller who was extrememly helpful. I also contacted him about their gaskets in light of the previous post and he replied that their gaskets are graphite and steel and the best you can get. They look pretty darned good to me.

use MR Gasket header gaskets. I've had mine on for 3 years now and not one leak or blowout.

Hi Rich, my Thorleys just showed up also. I was also thinking about removing the inner fender wells for access, is it worth it? What other tips can you tell me about the re/reinstall.
How do you like them? Any noticeable power/mileage improvements?
Cheers
Kirk

Hi,

I'm a bit new to FTE, but here goes.

I've got a 90 F350 with a 460 and am considering headers too, so I'm quite interested in the discussion around these Thorley headers.

From looking at the Doug Thorley site, it looks like I'd be looking at a THY-214Y-FI2 because I have a standard transmission.

Who have you ordered them from? It doesnt look like Doug Thorley sells direct.

Thanks, Don

Hey Don
Looks like you live just around the corner. Thorley will sell direct to you, just call them - but I got a better price from Summit.

Hi Kirk,
I noticed you were close by, which made me think that Thorley could be a viable supplier.
This makes 2 headers that may fit my application.
I've checked Summit and think I've found the right one in their part DTE-214Y-FI2. Not exactly cheap stuff for a 460, but a bit less than Hooker.
Seems there are more header choices for 93-onward.
Sure interested in your experience putting these on, and in how they perform.
Don

Starting the re/re tomorrow morning. Manifold bolts are soaking in AeroKroil penetrant since yesterday. Hoping the rain holds off. These Thorley ceramic coated 460 Tri-Ys are a very nice piece of work and the kit is complete with all the bits. You will need a mig welder to complete the install though. I'm also installing a multi-disc torque converter and Transgo "Tugger" kit in the E4OD tranny. I'll keep you informed if you like.

Manifold removal went well with out any problems. Zero broken bolts. I did remove the inner fenderwells and it greatly helps with access.

Hey 460Kirk,
Just curious. What do you need the mig welder for?

I have long tube header on a 1995 ford 150, 5.0 big improvement and I recommend to take out the plastic fenders LOng tube are a pain. Shorty's aren't to bad but extra room by take front tires off and fenders will help A lot. I have installed 12 different pairs of headers for friends. It will help by getting the extra room
