I jumped into my truck (F350 DRW)tonightand it would not start.
Drove it home this afternoon fine.
Engine turns over fine so batteries are not flat,
Normal lights on dash,
Acting like there is no spark like on a gas engine ceptin of course it is a diesel.
how cold was it at night? The glow plugs are necessary when it gets overly cold, and the diesel can gel up too. As of right now I'm thinking glow plugs.
Mine is torn apart at the dealer right now. Will start cold but not after it has been running for a period of time. I have an '05 and this problem started at 36,450 miles. Go figure

My '05 quit running while driving... lucky you! Anyway, same symptoms... after 2 weeks in the shop (31k miles, btw), they found an O-ring had failed on a splitter tube for the high pressure oil system. This system feeds the injectors and is necessary for them to operate. Of course, before they found the O-ring, they did fumble around a lot replacing things (EGR, 1 injector, oil, etc.) due to all the fault codes they found - none of which were for this problem though. Sometimes the computers & codes don't work...
2005 High Pressure Oil System Leak:
Some 2005 SuperDuties and Excursions built after 1-10-05 may experience symptoms related to high pressure oil system leakage, most commonly a hard/no start when the engine is warm. If diagnosis indicates a leak at the HP oil pump, inspect the pump quick connect fitting. If the leak is at the fitting o-ring, replace the fitting with P/N W301727. Broadcast Message 4320.
Or:
2005 Trucks, Crank/No Start, Hard Start, Runs Runs Rough at Idle:
Pickups and vans built before 4-15-05 and Excursions built between 1-10 and 4-15-05 may exhibit hard or no start conditions with a low ICP signal, or a rough idle with a high ICP signal. This may be due to a damaged high pressure oil pump and/or IPR valve. The IPR valve should be removed (mounted on HPP cover under the turbo) and inspected for a damaged inlet screen or debris on over half the screen. If either condition is present, the IPR (5C3Z-9C968-CA) and the high pressure oil pump (5C3Z-9A543-AA) should be replaced, along with the oil and oil filter. If neither condition is present, continue with normal diagnosis. If a rough idle is present after replacing the above parts, injector damage may have occured.
TSB 50-12-3.
I should have stated it is an 06 model. 2180 miles on the clock, have not even got the plates yet.
I had it towed to the dealer yesterday morning. They said low oil pressure is stopping it from starting.
The gave me a courtesy vehicle to drive while it is in the shop.
Received a call from the dealer this afternoon and they still have not found the problem. Needed a new tool to dive into the diesel further and that will not arrive until Tuesday.
I think I will be paying them a visit tomorrow and talk to the mechanic himself.

That's a good excuse! I know if it was me, I'd be looking for a Ford "truck" dealer - not a car dealer who sells trucks. I'm taking mine in to a truck dealer next week to have the motor looked at (it smokes and runs horrible until warm).
I was going to take it to the dealer where I bought it, but the only diesel mechanic cut his finger off and is out for a few weeks. The second closest dealer's #1 diesel guy quit and started his own business - I think they are left with only their #2 guy... Both of these dealers are car dealers who sell trucks. The truck dealership sells only trucks... and they have more than one diesel guy and a larger inventory of parts.
BTW, when mine died a few months ago, I had to talk (threaten?) to the service manager and dealership manager to get things going... like waiting for parts...
Mark, I hear Sunrise Ford out in San Bernardino has a good diesel guy. He builds his own engines for racing...not sure of his name, but if U mention about the engine building, they should know who it is. It is a ways to drive (I live in Culver City myself) but if push comes to shove, U might want to call them. Good luck!
I had lots of problems with my local car dealership's service department. I switched to a local medium duty Ford dealer ( Heavy truck mechanics) and have been happy since
Here is an update the problems of not being able to start.
As of yesterday the truck has been at the dealer for 3 weeks and is still not operable. They had to wait for some tooling, ordered the new parts in the oil pump somewhere and it still will not start.
Getting close to the CA lemon law.
I finally got my truck back after 4+ weeks in the shop.
Here is as written on the repair sheet.
Vehicle cranks but won't start.
