there's something loose in my cat.. It's too big for it to just shoot out. how do you go about hollowing out a cat? just shove a stick in there like a breaker bar and wiggle it around and it'll eventually come out? i straight piped my exhaust and the cut off is right after the cat. so, shoving something in there to break things up shouldn't be all that hard to access. so yea, what i wanna know is, is the break bar and smashing things up in the cat the way ta' go?
thanks!
you could take a pipe and cut some teeth on one end with a hack saw. Push into cat with twisting motion. Cuts through the brittle honeycomb pretty easily. Wear a mask when you do it. I can't imagine any of that dust being good for you.
The nicest way to handle this is to remove the cat, cut a 4" by 4" square hole in the top with a mini grinder. A small ball pean hammer will clean the guts out quite nicely. Mig weld the piece back in and reinstall. A short spray of BBQ paint and you're in business.
if you have it removed, which I would suggest, a prybar will work just fine and you need to get the metal mesh out also! Gloves and a mask is a good suggestion!
When i actually had cats, I opened up access the back of the 2nd cat downstream, and beat the hell out of the honeycomb inside with a small pipe we had. It was about an inch in diameter and 2 1/2 feet long. Went all the way through, but when i reconnected my tail pipe, i was throwin honeycombs for weeks. I had to be careful about getting into the throttle beside a car, cause those pieces would come just a flyin out and hittin other peoples cars. whoops...
I wasnt thinking about that because we dont have emissions here, but you do need to check the emission laws where you live before you do any changes to the emissions on your vehicle.
in my area, there are emissions laws. luckily.. i don't have to take it in to smog it again until next year. so, i have pleeenty of time to get another cat. I'd like to keep that cat on just so that it at least looks legal. since i've straight piped it right after the cat, i can see what the problem is. there's this really big maybe almost round-ish thing that looks something like a mesh screen. not this honeycomb thing i've been hearing about. but yea, it's biggg and wont just fly out. maybe i'll have to do some convincing with the ginormous tire iron that came with my F250 heh heh heh. ;]
i did the same thing and got chunks in there too, all i did was take a crowbar and try to break it down some and took a shop vac and stuck it up in there and sucked it right out, it didnt go down the pipe of the vac cause it was too big but it stuck to the end, i know what you mean man that sound of something wiggling around in there when your stopped at a light is embarrassing and sick
goodluck

on my 1990 I just cut squares out of the sides.....beat it till it all came out....welded the squares back on then stuck the heat shelds back on......you can never tell i was there.....When i got exhaust on my 95 i just had them removed...paid cash of course.
lol DEFF wear a mask..i breathed that **** in like 2weeks ago and ive had the nastiest cough since i did it..i mean nasty cough..the way i hollowed it out which was easy as hell was get a large drill bit.and drill right through it..and then get a crowbar and scrape the sides and after a minute it all falls apart.
